Samuel G. Okech (SGO) is a veterinarian, a learning process facilitator, mentor and a highly enthusiastic person about partnerships and multidisciplinary collaborations in training, research and community service; communicating science to non-science audiences; animal welfare; One Health and application of technology to enrich and enhance quality of learning and service. His calling is service.

He believes that education should not be a privilege, neither should it be used as a criterion for discriminative characterisation. It should rather be a right for everyone and if its process conferred true learning, it should impart character and wisdom upon its possessors to do good works while being highly respectful and supportive of those without it to ensure the latter also acquire it. He gives his best to make a contribution, however humble, to enhance democratisation of knowledge and skills. He offers his two cents in teaching, mentorship, research and service for the good of mankind, animals and the environment.

  • Veterinary clinical practice, consultancy services, promotion of animal welfare and regulation of practice.
  • Instructional design and service-learning for different learner categories.
  • Application of educational technologies to enhance teaching and learning.
  • Communicating science to non-science audiences (media and the public).
  • Corporate governance in public and private sector.
  • Policy design and advocacy in the animal industry.
  • One Health training and practice.
  • Community mobilisation, design, implementation and evaluation of community education and development programmes.

Previous and current responsibilities

SGO is a Past President of Uganda Veterinary Association, a former member of the Commonwealth Veterinary Association Council, a former Board Member of the National Drug Authority (Uganda), a former Member of the World Veterinary Association Strategic Focus Group on Animal Welfare, is currently a member of the Uganda Veterinary Board, an Ambassador for African Small Companion Animal Network and a Founder Member of Uganda Small Animal Practitioners Association.

He is a mentor on the MasterCard Scholars Program at Makerere University and coordinates various training programmes in Makerere University. Besides taking e-learning courses in University of Colombo in Sri Lanka and University of Edinburgh in Scotland, he has also been a visiting scholar in Michigan State and Mississippi State Universities in the USA and is currently pursuing a PhD in University of Bern in Switzerland.
